Southbourne is a large parish comprising a number of settlements which mainly straddle the A259 coastal road, formerly the A27. The new A27 trunk road now by-passes the Parish to the north. The Parish is on the Western boundary of West Sussex where it joins Hampshire at Emsworth. The upper reaches of the Thorney Channel of Chichester Harbour form the Southern boundary at Nutbourne and Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Having good East/West road links and a Railway Station at Southbourne on the Portsmouth to London Victoria line, makes the area a popular place in which to live for people working in both Hampshire and West Sussex. This has led to an influx of new housing over the years. A number of businesses are located in the Parish and there is a small industrial estate in Southbourne itself. However, the area still remains predominantly residential/agricultural in character.

There are good facilities in the Parish; Bourne Community College is a large comprehensive school serving the area and there are Infant and Junior Schools. The Library and Village Hall are to be found in First Avenue and Age Concern has a Day Centre in New Road. The Parish Council provides a recreation ground in Park Road with two football pitches, an artificial cricket pitch, children's playground and a pavilion.
